Messi won’t join Barca pre-season until he signs new deal: Diario AS

Leo Messi will not join the pre-season at Barcelona until he signs an extension with the club, the reliable Diario AS journalist Javi Miguel says. Until then, he will continue his vacation. The Catalans, meanwhile, started the pre-season on July 12 and have already played three friendlies.

The previous plan was for the 34-year-old to return to Ciutat Esportiva on August 2, but that option has been dismissed by the club. Messi is currently a free agent as his contract at Barca expired on June 30.

The Catalans’ goal is to sign a new deal with Leo before August 13 so that he will be available from the start of the 2021/22 La Liga campaign. Blaugrana start their season with a home clash against Real Sociedad on August 15.

Barca are optimistic that they will make Messi’s extension official in the near future, the source adds. However, there are certain difficulties, like the huge wage bill, which are impending Leo’s official registration.
